The Division of Historic Sites was created in 1980. It was established by 1980 Wisconsin Act 27 and amended by 1985 Wisconsin Act 29. The origins of the Museum at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin (WIHV85-A216) can be traced back to the 1850s, with a division-type organizational structure dating to the early 1890s.
